Dysphagia
Evaluation and Treatment
Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that can affect the safety and efficiency of eating and drinking. It may occur as a result of neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, or dementia, as well as head and neck cancer, prolonged intubation, deconditioning, or age-related changes. Common signs include coughing or choking with meals, difficulty clearing food or liquid, a sensation of food “sticking,” unexplained weight loss, dehydration, or recurrent pneumonia. At Speech & Swallowing Therapy, PLLC, we specialize in the evaluation and treatment of complex swallowing disorders using evidence-based assessment, including Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). Treatment is individualized and focused on the underlying physiology of the swallowing impairment rather than symptoms alone. Our services include diagnostic evaluation, diet and strategy recommendations, neuromuscular re-education, and caregiver education. Our clinicians are certified in the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP) and VitalStim therapy with surface electromyography (sEMG), allowing us to provide intensive, targeted rehabilitation for patients with mild to severe dysphagia. We work closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to support safe swallowing, maximize recovery, and improve quality of life.
